model railway structures in rail yard

The Repair-In-Place facility is quite today. Only one car waits to be repaired today. A RIP facility can add a lot of operational as well as scenic interest to a layout. Cars arrive, spend the rest of the operating session being repaired, and then continue their journey the next operating session.

coal mining operation on model railroad layout

Coal mining is a popular model subject within the hobby. Here the mine has filled all the cars provided by the railroad. Later a mine local will arrive and replace the loaded cars with empty cars, and will take the loaded ones to the nearest yard for pickup by another train. A freight train makes it way past the mine, headed further into the mountains.

railway layouts yard setup

If you have the space you can have a yard like this on your layout. While this size of yard on a prototype railroad would not be considered overly large, for a model railroad this size yard is quite large and offers a lot of operational possibilities. Notice the tracks in the foreground which are used to store trains, and the industries in the background. There is also a passenger depot behind the foreground tracks.

model train crossing bridge

An RS unit eases it's mixed train of 2 box cars and a passenger coach in the wayside stop. Mountain scenery need not require a large room, garage or basement empire. This photo is of a layout that was only 8x6 feet, and yet still has steep and 100 scale feet high mountains, bridges and many different levels of track. Even on a layout as small as 6x4 feet you can have trains hauling trains through mountain scenery, with a little careful planning.
